About Rory Holwerda  BHSc CM, R.Ac, CMD

As a Registered Doctor of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncturist, a large part of my practice is dedicated to chronic pain and internal medicine, however I specialize in the treatment of chronic skin conditions.

My approach is simple: To fix the plant, you must first heal the soil. Whether treating an angry skin flare or persistent pain, I look beyond the surface to repair the internal environment where these issues begin. Complex conditions require deep expertise, not "quick fixes."

Education & Training

My foundation is built on five years of full-time, university-level study to earn my degree in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. I have undertaken academic and clinical training at the Australian Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, RMIT University, and the Southern School of Natural Medicine.

By combining specialized acupuncture techniques with custom-formulated Chinese herbal therapy, I create treatment plans as unique as your own biology.

FAQ & NEW PATIENT INFO

1. What should I expect during my first consultation?
Your initial visit is a thorough clinical assessment where we look beyond surface symptoms to understand your underlying “soil” pattern — the internal factors contributing to your condition.

  • Halifax Patients: Your appointment includes a detailed intake and a high-precision acupuncture treatment tailored to your needs.

  • Virtual Dermatology Patients (Canada-wide): We review your history, current flare patterns, and lifestyle to design a custom herbal protocol aimed at lasting improvement.

2. How many sessions will I need?
Healing chronic conditions is a systemic process. While each person is unique, typical timelines are:

  • Chronic Pain: Many patients feel relief after the first session, with 4–10 sessions recommended for long-term stability.

  • Hormonal Health: Significant regulation is often seen within 1–2 menstrual cycles.

  • Chronic Skin Conditions: Because we address inflammation from the inside out, 6–12+ weeks is generally needed for lasting results.

3. How long is each acupuncture session?
Initial consultations typically last 45–60 minutes; follow-ups are 30–45 minutes. Most patients find sessions relaxing, and many notice reduced tension, calmer skin, or increased mobility afterward.

4. How do I get my herbal medicine?
Your custom formula is prepared with professional-grade concentrated granules or capsules — high-potency, convenient extracts that require no boiling.

  • Halifax Patients: Pickup can be arranged at the clinic.

  • Virtual Patients (Canada-wide): Herbs are shipped directly to your door.

Cost: Custom herbal therapy is tailored to your biology. Most patients invest between $2–$8 per day.

All herbs are medical-grade, third-party tested, and verified for purity, heavy metals, and contaminants.

5. Does acupuncture hurt?
I use a minimalist, distal technique that is exceptionally gentle. Most patients feel very little sensation and often relax or fall asleep during treatment. The goal is to regulate the nervous system and support systemic healing, not overwhelm it.

6. Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
Yes. Most extended health plans in Canada cover acupuncture. At our Halifax clinic, we provide direct billing for most major providers to make your care seamless.

7. How should I prepare for my first visit?
Wear comfortable clothing, bring any relevant medical records or test results, and be ready to discuss your health history and lifestyle. Eating a light meal beforehand is recommended.

8. How quickly will I notice results?
Many patients experience immediate improvements — reduced pain, calmer skin, or better sleep. Lasting results generally require consistent treatment, tailored to your unique condition.

9. Are there any side effects?
Acupuncture and herbal medicine are generally very safe. Minor, temporary effects may include slight bruising, mild fatigue, or increased urination, which are typically short-lived and can indicate the body is responding to treatment.

10. Can I combine acupuncture with my current medications or supplements?
Yes. Chinese medicine can often be safely integrated with conventional treatments. Your practitioner will review your medications and supplements to ensure compatibility and optimize results.

11. How do I know if herbal medicine is working?
You may notice subtle improvements in energy, sleep, mood, or symptoms within a few days to weeks. Full benefits usually appear after several weeks of consistent use, depending on your condition.

12. Can acupuncture help prevent illness or maintain wellness?
Absolutely. Many patients use acupuncture and Chinese medicine for preventative care, stress management, and overall resilience, even when they aren’t experiencing acute symptoms.

13. Can children or older adults receive treatment?
Yes. Treatments are adapted for all ages, from pediatric patients to older adults, with techniques adjusted for comfort and safety.

14. How do virtual consultations work?
For dermatology and internal medicine, virtual visits provide a full assessment, individualized treatment plan, and prescription for herbal medicine shipped directly to your home. Follow-ups can also be conducted virtually.

15. What if I don’t respond to treatment as expected?
Your care plan is flexible and personalized. Progress is monitored closely, and acupuncture points, herbal formulas, and lifestyle guidance are adjusted to maximize results.
